The Pick-Up Sticks Icebreaker is a seemingly simple yet effective exercise - all the team have to do is return the stick to the floor so why does it keep going up instead of down?!
So How Does The Pick-Up Sticks Icebreaker Work?
This tried and tested activity is also know as The Helium Stick, The Levitating Stick and The Impossible Stick. And those are just the names that we have come across in our collective 30 years of running team building sessions all across the UK!
For our Pick-Up Stick Icebreaker activity, a long stick is placed across the thumbs of each team member and the thumbs must remain in contact with the stick at all times as the stick is lowered down to the floor.
Sounds easy? To everyones surprise, at first the stick seems to want to go up instead of down! Have we been sneaky and filled the stick with helium gas?
This really is a team building icebreaker at it's best as the team has to really concentrate and focus their efforts if they are to succeed.
Communication really is the key to success - not only for this activity, but in business in general. We can really help explore this core skill with this activity. Why does someone move their hand up when they have clearly been told to move it down? Find out the answer to this mysterious question with a comprehensive de-brief by our experienced facilitator.
